Lunar New Year is on Sunday, January 29 this year. Help us ring in the Year of the Dog by sharing your stories about Asian traditions in your family - how do you celebrate the New Year? Do you believe in Asian astrology or superstitions? How do customs differ from family to family and culture to culture?

Din Tai Fung Dumpling House - Arcadia, CA, 91007-7508 - Citysearch
In Short
As the only U.S. outpost of a famed Taipei dumpling house, the hustle-and-bustle atmosphere only adds to the authenticity. Waitresses balancing dumpling tins rush between tables, while diners watch chefs wrap and steam in the glass-fronted kitchen. Highlights are Shanghai-style dumplings, pasta pillows filled with broth and meats like pork and crab. Crescent-shaped vegetable dumplings are loaded with minced greens; pork dumplings are crowned with little shrimp. The menu also features buns, soups and noodles.

Taiwan Sharon Visiting United States

There is this girl named Sharon…. she is special. The last time I saw her in person was in 1998 when I was in Loveboat. She was so nice to take me to my dad’s school. I don’t know why she did that… to spend her free time with me. Anyhow we spent the day together. Now almost 8 years later, she happened to be travelling to United States for work and she was able to stop by Los Angeles. It’s been such a long time. I wonder if I’ve changed. I wonder if she has changed.

Joe’s Shanghai - New York, NY, 10013-5134 - Citysearch

Okay… I ate in on recommendation from Amy. She said it was better than Ding Tai Fong…. well.. if you know Ding Tai Fong in SoCal/Taiwan/Japan/Korea… you know that it’s holy ground for many chinese. So anyhow I got their Xiao Long Bao (dumplings) and although I’d say it was very good… I didn’t think it was better than Ding Tai Fong. Sorry Amy!

Joe’s Shanghai - New York, NY, 10013-5134 - Citysearch
The Scene
It’s true that most of Joe’s customers here aren’t from Chinatown, and that Joe’s menu offers some mall-friendly, not-so-Chinese creations, such as sesame chicken. Still, customers line up here for a reason: Joe’s cuisine is consistently top-notch and otherwise authentic Shanghainese. Prices compare to the bigger restaurants in Chinatown, and the wall of critics’ praises grows larger every year.

The Food
It’s difficult to find anything that isn’t outstanding. Drool over the succulent pork shoulder, braised tender and sweet in a smoky, malted sauce (perfect over rice), and melt-in-your-mouth fresh bacon, sliced invitingly over vegetables. Crispy chicken pieces on the bone, marinated in soy sauce and garlic, is like fried chicken gone to flavor heaven. Joe’s famous fried flat noodles taste homemade, with perfect body and springiness. Finish with sweet red bean pancakes, oozing with fragrant, delectable red bean paste.

Lego Knitting Machines: What’s Next? The Matrix? - Gizmodo

This soooooo cool…

Lego Knitting Machines: What’s Next? The Matrix? - Gizmodo
Here’s a tight piece of Lego machinery, a machine that knits stuff. It’ll knit you a scarf, some knickers, or anything it damn well pleases. Made by Tom Johnson, the knitting machine is based on the Lego Technic sets. It works a bit slowly, but that adds an even creepier robotic, Matrix-esque feel to it. Almost as if it’s going to attack you.
